Washington County Inmate Release Meaning
A release from the Washington County Detention Center is a movement out of that local custody. It does not always mean the person is free of all restraint. The person may leave on bond, finish a sentence, receive time served, have a charge dismissed, or move to another custodian. A transfer to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, another jail, federal custody, immigration detention, or a treatment placement also removes the person from the local jail population.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office holds the booking and movement record for its detention center. The Clerk of Superior Court holds the case disposition, judgment, and release order. NCDAC maintains state-prison and community-supervision records. Each record answers a different question, so a missing name on one system should lead to the next relevant custodian, not to a firm conclusion.
- Discharge
- The end of a custody term or supervision status recorded by the responsible agency.
- Time served
- A court outcome crediting time already spent in custody toward the sentence.
- Parole
- Conditional release for an eligible person sentenced under an older parole law.
- Probation
- A court-ordered form of community supervision that may occur instead of, or after, confinement.
Washington County Release Paths
The movement reason controls where a Washington County release can be confirmed next. A bond or pretrial release normally points back to the court case and any bond conditions. A completed local sentence points to the jail movement record and judgment. State-prison entry is not a community release even though the county jail record may show that local custody ended.
| Movement | Meaning | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or pretrial release | Community release while the case continues | Court order and Detention movement |
| Time served or sentence completion | Local confinement has ended | Judgment and release movement |
| Dismissal | The charge ended without a conviction on that count | Clerk or eCourts disposition |
| NCDAC transfer | Local custody ended, state custody began | NCDAC Offender Public Information |
| Federal or ICE transfer | Another sovereign holds the person | BOP, federal court, or ICE system |
A detainer is a request or legal basis for another agency to take custody. It can block a planned community release. The receiving agency's record is therefore essential when the county movement says transfer rather than release to the street.
Washington County Release Record Fields
Washington County does not publish a local release feed with a fixed public field list. Request the existing booking and release movement for a named booking episode. A useful request identifies the person, approximate booking period, and the specific fields sought. Ask for records as maintained rather than asking the office to calculate a legal conclusion.
| Field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Name and identifying data | Whether the movement belongs to the intended person |
| Booking number and date | The exact local custody episode |
| Charge or holding authority | Why the person entered or remained in custody |
| Release or movement date | When Washington County custody ended or changed |
| Release type or destination | Bond, time served, transfer, or another recorded outcome |
| Releasing facility | Which office created the movement |
Booking data should be matched with the court file. A charge at intake is not a final disposition. Likewise, a release movement does not by itself show whether supervision, a new case, or another custody system followed.
Request Washington County Release Records
The Sheriff's official page gives no dedicated online release-record form or separate records hours. North Carolina Chapter 132 allows requests without special wording, and a requester may ask to inspect or receive copies of existing public records. Some criminal-investigation material may be protected under G.S. 132-1.4, so production can differ by field.
- Call Detention at 252-793-1107 to confirm the correct custodian and describe the booking episode.
- Send or deliver a focused request to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, 120 Adams Street, PO Box 969, Plymouth, NC 27962.
- Ask for the booking and release movement, including the recorded date, type, and destination.
- Request a fee estimate before copies are made because the official page publishes no separate schedule.
- Match the response to the Clerk's disposition or receiving-agency record.

North Carolina law calls for access at reasonable times and under reasonable supervision. It does not create a fixed statewide response deadline. A clear, narrow request is easier to route. For the state system, use the NCDAC public-records form, which is separate from the county request.
Route Washington County Release Records
The Sheriff and Clerk both use 120 Adams Street, yet they are separate custodians. The Sheriff's office is listed on the fourth floor. Clerk offices are on the first floor, and the courtroom is on the second. Their post-office boxes are also different. This shared location makes it easy to send a sound request to the wrong office.
Ask Sheriff or Detention staff for booking, custody, and release movement. Ask the Clerk for a disposition, judgment, bond order, or certified court copy. The Washington County Judicial Branch page connects to calendars and eCourts resources. Court records can show why a jail movement occurred, while the jail record supplies the actual local custody event.
Expunged Washington County Release Records
An expunction is a court process that removes qualifying records as state law directs. It is not the same as a jail roster simply aging off the web. The North Carolina Judicial Branch warns that an expunction can destroy the official case file and the expunction order itself. A person receiving an order should keep the copy supplied when it enters.
The official North Carolina expunction instructions explain the filing path and effects. For qualifying matters filed on or after December 1, 2017, later verification may be possible through an Administrative Office of the Courts certificate. An old copied item elsewhere does not prove that the court still maintains a public case file.
The captured state expunction page shows why a once-visible Washington County court trail may later be absent.

Use the current court process rather than assuming a missing result is a search error.
Find Washington County Released Inmates
Start with identity and a timeline. Use the full legal name, date of birth when lawfully available, likely booking date, and agency. Similar names and the many Washington counties in other states create false matches. Confirm that every source refers to Plymouth, North Carolina, or to the correct state or federal system.
- Call Washington County Detention for current local custody or a recent movement.
- Check the Clerk or eCourts Portal for the case disposition and release order.
- Search NCDAC when a state-prison transfer or state sentence is possible.
- Use NC SAVAN or VINELink for a participating jail or state notification record.
- Use BOP, ICE, or the federal docket only when federal custody applies.
- Request the source record when online systems do not resolve the event.
The county has no verified online 24-hour or 72-hour feed as of July 30, 2026. The Washington County 24-Hour Releases path therefore begins with Detention and records, not an invented list.
NCDAC Washington County Release Search
The NCDAC Offender Public Information search covers people in North Carolina state custody and historical records going back to 1972. Search by name or offender number. The form also offers gender, race, birth date, age range, and status filters. County fields can refer to conviction or supervision geography, so they should not be read as proof that a person stayed in the Washington County jail.
| Search field | Use |
|---|---|
| Offender number | Best exact state-record key when known |
| Last and first name | Broad identity search |
| Birth date or age range | Separates similar names |
| Status | Narrows active, inactive, probation, or parole records |
| County | Filters the state record by the offered county relationship |
The official NCDAC form displays the fields and status choices used in a Washington County state-release check.

Open the matching detail and compare status, Actual Release Date, Projected Release Date, sentence history, and Community Supervision entries.
The separate NCDAC Inmate Release Search lists state-prison releases for the current year and two prior calendar years, with month, year, and county options. It is not a Washington County jail release feed.
Getting Home After Washington County Release
Riverlight Transit is a real call-ahead option for Washington County residents. Its service area includes Plymouth, Roper, Creswell, and several regional destinations. Vehicles operate Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and trips are arranged through 252-793-4041 extension 255.
The official Riverlight Transit page does not promise pickup at the jail door. Evening, weekend, or unplanned release may fall outside its operating window. Confirm the actual release place and time first, then ask the transit office whether a suitable trip is available.
The county transit page shows the stated destinations and call-ahead schedule relevant after a local release.

The schedule supports planning, but it is not proof of a correctional transportation service.
Washington County Post-Release Supervision
State records distinguish prison release from the end of all supervision. Post-release supervision follows many Structured Sentencing prison terms. Parole applies mainly to eligible older-law sentences. Probation comes from the court and may exist without a state-prison release. NCDAC Community Supervision records and the Plymouth office can help identify the correct route, though some assignment details are confidential.
Use the person's NCDAC record first, then the current Community Supervision directory. The Plymouth resource sheet lists 202 East Water Street and 252-793-3021, but the official directory should be checked before relying on that contact. The Washington County Post-Release Supervision page separates parole, probation, absconder information, and discharge.
Washington County Release Notifications
NC SAVAN, also called VINELink, provides custody and event notices from participating county jails and the North Carolina state-prison system. For a Washington County jail event, the notice reflects information reported by the local custodian. For NCDAC, state materials describe notices for a projected date, release with supervision, and release without supervision. The service can help track a known person, but it does not replace the booking movement, court order, or NCDAC offender detail.
- Open the North Carolina VINELink page and search for the specific person.
- Match the identifier and reporting agency to the known Washington County custody episode.
- Choose the notification events and phone, email, or text method currently offered.
- For telephone alerts, create the required four-digit PIN and enter it when a call arrives.
- Confirm the event with Washington County Detention or NCDAC after the alert.
North Carolina materials describe the service as free and anonymous. If a telephone alert is not acknowledged with the PIN, calls may repeat for 24 hours during the stated 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. calling window. Keep an independent contact plan because automated records can lag or fail. VINELink does not cover BOP, ICE, or U.S. Marshals custody.
The North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry is a separate system with a narrow statutory scope. It can show registration information and supports address-alert registration, but it is not a general Washington County inmate release locator. Use it only when the person's legal registration status makes that source relevant.
A no-match on VINE is inconclusive. The person may be recorded under another spelling, held by a nonparticipating source, outside the system's retained window, or already moved to a federal custodian. Recheck the agency and identifiers, then use the release-record path tied to that custodian. Do not treat a notification enrollment screen as proof of current custody or as an official release certificate.
Federal Washington County Release Windows
Federal systems have sharply different time limits. The BOP locator generally covers federal prisoners released from 1982 onward. A BOP result marked Released means the person left BOP custody; supervised release, another agency, or a residential placement may still follow. The federal docket or release order supplies legal context.
ICE's Online Detainee Locator System keeps released-person information for only 60 days. A negative result after that window is weak evidence. Search with the A-number and country of birth when known, or use the exact name, birth date, and country of birth. The ICE information line is 1-888-351-4024. U.S. Marshals custody has no comparable public released-person locator, so the federal court order and actual holding facility matter most.
The BOP field guide explains the scope of a Released result.

Read that status only as departure from BOP custody, not as a universal custody check.
Compare Washington County Release Sources
Choose a source by custodian and time period. Recheck a doubtful result with the office that created it. Records can update at different speeds, and a court order may appear before a jail movement finishes.
| Source | Best for | Released-person evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Washington County Detention | Local jail custody | Booking and movement record |
| Clerk or eCourts | Case outcome | Disposition, judgment, release order |
| NCDAC | State prison and supervision | Actual Release Date, status, supervision |
| NC SAVAN/VINELink | Participating custody notice | Agency-reported event and alerts |
| BOP or ICE | Federal or immigration custody | System-specific release result |
Still-in-custody tools answer where a person is now. Release records answer when and how custody ended. Court records answer what legal event drove that change. None should be silently substituted for another.
Verify Washington County Release Locations
County budget materials discuss repairs and an updated regional detention-center study, while a December 2024 agenda carried a related study item. These documents provide planning context only. They do not establish that the Washington County Detention Center closed, moved, or changed its release point.
Families and representatives should confirm a location close to the event before traveling. Use the official Sheriff's page and Detention line rather than an old map result. The verified page list covers the Washington County Detention Center, North Carolina state-prison system, federal prison and Marshals custody, and ICE detention system.
The local detention center serves adults held under Washington County authority. The state page represents a statewide prison network, not a prison physically located in the county. Federal and immigration pages likewise describe outside systems that may receive or release a Washington County resident. Keeping those categories separate prevents a transfer record from being mistaken for a return to the community. It also tells the requester which office created the next movement. When the destination is not clear, ask Detention for the recorded receiving authority and date, then use that agency's identifier in its own locator or records request.
Note: No official source reviewed for this build confirms a separate adult prison, federal prison, ICE center, or regional jail inside Washington County.
